Cambridge, MA – Metro Mobility, a Cambridge-based micromobility technology startup, has been honored with a 2025 Transportation Innovation Award from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) for groundbreaking work deploying e-bike libraries powered by their proprietary ChargeLock™ technology. As one of the most prestigious recognitions in the Massachusetts transportation sector, the MassDOT Innovation Award celebrates transformative projects that enhance mobility, sustainability, and accessibility across the Commonwealth.

Metro Mobility’s ChargeLock system is a cutting-edge solution that integrates electric charging and secure locking into a single user-friendly cable, enabling efficient deployment of self-charging e-bike and scooter fleets. The system’s flexible, low-cost installation requirements have allowed the company to establish ChargeLock stations across a wide range of environments—without the need for complex infrastructure upgrades. The initiative has been especially impactful in low-income communities throughout eastern Massachusetts, where e-bikes can be rented for just $1 per day, thanks in part to grant funding from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC).

Through collaborations with municipalities, housing authorities, employers, and private affordable housing providers, Metro Mobility has expanded access to clean transportation while promoting social equity. By eliminating the need for manual battery swaps or charging logistics, the ChargeLock system significantly reduces operating costs and provides a seamless, reliable experience for users. This model offers a powerful template for how cities can implement scalable, sustainable micromobility solutions that serve everyone.

“Receiving the MassDOT Innovation Award is a tremendous honor,” said David Montague, CEO at Metro Mobility. “It’s a testament to the hard work of our team and our partners across Massachusetts who believe in making clean, affordable transportation accessible to all. With ChargeLock, we’re not just building technology—we’re building equity and climate resilience into the core of our home state of Massachusetts.”
